This lesson is aimed at Key Stage One, and may also be suitable for Foundation Stage Children, if working with older children, or an adult to help them to read the content.
Previous knowledge
It is helpful if children are familiar with Barnaby Bear before starting this unit,
and they should also be familiar with using a web browser toolbar.
This lesson should take a couple of weekly ICT slots, but there is no reason why it could not be done as homework, or in one longer session. As I teach a mixed age and Key Stage class, my pupils will be grouped in threes: mixed ability according to literacy skills.
The following is the 'process' for the children. Anything in this font is just notes of how I would work it at my school: with an interactive whiteboard in the classroom, and a separate ICT suite.
- First you'll be put into groups of 3
see above note about mixed abilities - might be a good idea if the 'lawyer' is a good reader - Pick a role to play: you'll need a navigator (someone to get you to the information you need),
to use the mouse and navigate the web pages and applications - a lawyer (someone to do the writing)
record their findings in the attached word processor document: summarise and type, or copy and paste - and a pirate (someone to steal the information you need)
to right click, copy and paste You could print off the pictures here to use as badges or reminder cards You can swap roles each lesson to make it fair.
Are you in your groups? Now you are ready to go!
First you'll need to click here, to find the document the lawyer will need. odt version can be downloaded here, This is where you'll keep track of your evidence. Pick a role to play: you'll need a navigator (someone to get you to the information you need), a lawyer (someone to do the writing) and a pirate (someone to steal the information you need) You can swap roles each lesson to make it fair.
