The source of the River Fowey changed from a slow trickle of water into faster running water.
It is now much more like a proper stream.
Barnaby Bear has found a point in the river's course where it gushes over a rocky bank. The force of the water has made the pool at the bottom of this waterfall very deep. This is called a plunge pool.
Can you see Barnaby Bear hiding in the marsh grass by the pool? He loves to listen to the sound of the waterfall, and watch the horses grazing peacefully. The river is very clean and healthy here. You can tell because there is lots of plant-life.
When a river has lots living in it, experts say it is healthy. In a clean river it is very easy to see the riverbed where some of the water plants are growing. These plants wouldn't live here if the water was dirty and polluted. |
| A little further on, Barnaby Bear found a place where the river is really wide and shallow.
There is a low bank of grass here, that the river regularly floods. Can you see it? |

The River Fowey is very changeable in it's early stages.
Sometimes it is quite narrow, noisy and fast flowing. Sometimes it has steep banks. Sometimes it has shallow, sandy banks. Sometimes it is wide for wading in. Sometimes it is little more than a small flood plain. |
