Barnaby Bear learns about the River Fowey

Barnaby Bear in his favourite spot by the river.

This is Barnaby Bear's most favourite spot in the world. He is on the river bank, by the River Fowey , in Cornwall. It is very peaceful here, with just the sound of the river flowing by. He doesn't often hear cars because it is by a narrow, rural road.

Being very curious, Barnaby Bear has some questions about this spot. He sits by the river and wonders:

Where did it come from, where did it start, where is it going, what will happen to it?

Barnaby Bear started his investigation by looking in books and searching the internet. This is what he found out:

The River Fowey is pronounced "Foy" by the local people.
The River Fowey always has capital letters because it is it's name.
The River's source (start) is on Bodmin Moor at the foot of Buttern Hill.
It's source is 298 metres high, up in the hills (298 m above sea-level).
Lots of areas around it are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
It's mouth (end) is in a town called Fowey.
It has many tributaries - the biggest is called the River Lerryn (Ler - rin)
The River Fowey turns into an estuary at a place called Lostwithiel. (Lost - with - ee - el)
