Barnaby Bear visits a Nature Reserve

welcome to Bassenthwaite lake
about ospreys picture of osprey
view of bassenthwaite There are ospreys nesting (living) at Bassenthwaite Lake now. One pair had a chick this year! They live here from April to August, then migrate to Africa.
This is a view of Bassenthwaite lake. What kind of trees can you see here? What kind of landscape is this? Why do you think that ospreys like to live near here?
Ospreys live in large nests. In Cumbria they build their nests in trees. In other parts of the world they nest on pylons or in cliffs.
At the visitor centre, Barnaby Bear found a model of an osprey nest. It was huge! You can see in the photograph that he felt tiny! An adult osprey is about 1 metre tall - Barnaby Bear is about as big as an osprey chick!

an osprey chick born here Since ospreys have been living here, they have reared (brought up) 4 osprey chicks. This osprey is very young, and is already about as big as Barnaby Bear! This chick was born here this year. You can see videos and other photos of this chick by clicking on the picture. (But please ask your teacher before downloading anything).
Barnaby Bear says: "I was a little disapointed not to meet any ospreys, but they might have thought I was lunch! There are places here where you can sit and watch the ospreys. I am glad that the wardens here keep them safe from people who want to steal their eggs. Ospreys can only live here because lots of people work hard to keep them safe, and to keep the lake and surroundings clean. This means that the vendace fish and others can live here. That means lots of good food for the ospreys!"

You can find out about the ospreys that live here, and read the osprey watcher's diary by clicking here

Special thanks to Aunty Joan for taking Barnaby Bear on her visit to Whinlatter Visitor Centre
