Barnaby Bear visits the Isles of Scilly

Last
summer I visited St. Mary's with my friends. St.Mary's is one a group of islands
called the Scillies. How do you think we got there?

By air, in a helicopter.

OR

By sea, on a ship.

We travelled on the Scillonian (sil - oh - nee- un). Click the name to see Barnaby Bear's journey to the island.

St. Mary's is the biggest of the Isles of Scilly. It is 3 miles across. Can you find it on the map?

There are 50 islands in the group. Only 5 of them are inhabited by people: Tresco, St. Martin's, Bryher, St. Mary's and St. Agnes.

What do you think the red lines on the map are?

The first place Barnaby bear visited was the Post Office. He wanted to buy a post card for his scrap book. The Post Office is a very old building. The Post Office is very important to people who live on St. Mary's. Why do you think this is?

The weather on St. Mary's is very often hot. This is because these islands are in the path of the gulf stream, so the temperature is often warmer than on the mainland. What effect do you think the warm weather has on the islands?

St. Mary's is very beautiful, and there is lots to do and explore. But Barnaby Bear was very sad because he was only here for a day. He decided to see all he could by going on a tour. Click the bus below to find out more.
Katy bus
This picture is from a postcard that Barnaby bought. The bus is called Katy. She is a very special bus. She is very old. Barnaby did something exciting in the place in the photograph. See if you can find out what on the next page...
