Dartmoor National Park is 386 square miles of beautiful moorland landscape with wooded valleys and wind swept tors. Around 280 million years ago volcanic rock erupted, spilling its molten rock, which solidified into the granite that covers 65% of Dartmoor today. This granite forms the impressive tors on the moor, there are over 160 of them, the highest being High Willhays on the North Moor standing at 621 metres above sea level. |
| Dartmoor´s weather conditions are dominated by south-westerly winds, and is cool and wet. The most extreme weather conditions are in the high moorland areas in the North West and Southern Central areas, which exceed 450 metres above sea level. | Dartmoor has a variety of habitats and this makes it an important place for wildlife. It contains many areas of natural interest including blanket bogs, upland heaths, broadleaf woodlands and valley mires. |
