The Alpha and Omega School

Barnaby Bear face

"I really enjoyed my visit to the Alpha and Omega school. The children were really excited to have visitors, and made up lots of music to welcome us. This song is class Primary 3's welcome song."

Barnaby Bear's friends

teachers in Uganda Here are some of the teachers that Barnaby Bear met. They are standing outside one of the new classrooms that is being built - it hasn't got its roof on yet!

When the older children get to school in the morning they have some jobs to do:

The school has assembly in the morning. They line up in the playground in their classes, and sing the national anthem and their school song. One of the teacher talks to them and then a child leads prayers.

As they walk back to their classrooms they sing!

When they get to their classes, they learn to read and write, and they do number work. Barnaby Bear learned some numbers with the children. Can you see what they are learning in science?

Barnaby Bear helped the 'baby'class to write to their pen pals in Cornwall.
It is very exciting for the Cornish children to get letters all the way from Africa!

This was a practical science lesson. The older children in P3 and P4 (year 3 and 4) were learning how to make a drink to help them when they are dehydrated.

Their first meal of the day is porridge which they have at school at playtime. breakfast porridge for playtime

At break time, the children have lots of fun!

They love to play skipping games...

...and other games.

Hide and seek Sometimes they play hide and seek!
Barnaby Bear found his friends had been hiding in between the old and new classrooms!

The children do lots of other lessons the same as you might do. They enjoy music and dancing a lot...

Netball at playtime They have lots of P.E. lessons outside.
The girls love playing netball...
...and they have some lessons out on the field which is shared by the whole village. Can you see the cows on their playing field?

The school football team

They also have a good football team. Unfortunately Barnaby Bear was too small to have a game of football with them.

Could you play football in bare feet?

After watching all that exercise Barnaby Bear was very hungry, and wondered what was for lunch.

Barnaby Bear dreams of dinner

He didn't have long to wait... The dinner bell is being rung ...soon the dinner bell was being rung.
Let's go and see the cook!

Barnaby Bear meets the school cook... Here is the school cook. She has come out of the kitchen to meet Barnaby Bear.
She shows Barnaby Bear her kitchen. She needs lots of big pans to cook for all these hungry children, and now she needs more for all the visitors! Cooking lunch at the village school

After lunch it was time to settle down for the afternoon's activities.
Wednesday afternoon at the Alpha and Omega school is craft afternoon.
These girls are making baskets. The children here are very good at making things.
Craft afternoon - making baskets

Child collecting water from the spring The children have very busy days at the village school. This is how the children get water to their school, for drinking, washing, and for the cook to use. The water pours from a spring into this tank. They collect it in large containers and carry it back to school.
While Barnaby Bear was at the school, he went with the children to collect water. Mrs Grantham helped him to carry some water, but they both got tired very quickly! Do you know where your water comes from? children carrying water from the spring
Other people use this spring too. What do you think this lady is doing?
children with the new water tank After he had gone home, the school sent this photograph of some of the children with their new water tank. St Martin's school in Cornwall raised some money to help them buy it. They named the tank "Maureen and Kelly" after Mrs Grantham and Miss Edwards, who visited with Barnaby Bear.

This fills up during the rainy season, which means that the children only need to collect water when the tank is empty.

Barnaby Bear was very tired after his school day in a Ugandan village. He is very glad that he was allowed to go, and he hopes he will be back again to visit soon. I wonder what new changes he will find if he does?
